I read one quote on Instagram. ‘We don’t have Wi-Fi,’ said one of the hotel boards.’Talk to each other as if it is 1995.’ I completely agree with this statement. Remember when we weren’t working from home and were desperate for some family time? Now that we have got such a time, we must value it. So, to make the most of it, I spend more time with my family, talking to them, discussing my day, and sharing experiences. Mom and dad shared their stories with me, followed by laughter.
Health is wealth and we can’t ignore our health, so we can get involved in some kind of physical activity. I realised it only when I spent hours sitting in one place at work, and when I got up, I could hear the cracking of my bones. I decided to get involved in any physical activity that would help me relax a bit. I have planned my weekly activities with walks on alternate days and Zumba on other days.
I also decided to pursue my hobby. As a blogger, I keep scribbling my thoughts and, because I am an old school person, I write my points in my diary and only use my laptop to finalise my articles. Perhaps this is a form of double work, but it allows me to spend as little time as possible looking at a screen.
I am an avid reader as well, and I prefer reading hardcovers instead of reading books online. When I am busy doing any distressing activities, I make sure it is done in such a way that I am away from the screen. It not only helps me relax, but it also helps me rejuvenate my energy.
Most importantly, when I’m busy doing something and don’t want to be distracted by my phone’s beeping, I put it on silent mode. This eventually helped me spend less time on the screen.
Yes, social media accounts are necessary to get a breather from the daily routine, but there is a difference between doing something for fun, like watching reels or watching funny videos for some time, and getting obsessed with picking up the phone every two minutes just to kill time. I can’t deny that even social media accounts provide us with useful information. However, I noticed that simply scrolling through my phone increased my unproductive screen time. So I made a strict rule that I will check my social media accounts only when I am done with my schedule and it happens only when discipline is followed.
Technology can be a blessing or a curse, both at the same time. The best example would be when I got a new phone and discovered a new feature that allowed one of the built-in apps to track my screen time at the end of the day. So whenever I cross 7 hours of watching my phone screen, it pops up a message ‘You have spent 7 hours of screen time today. ‘Relax and take a break.’ It’s a warning. It was high time to get organised by following some simple rules and by sticking to them.
When I followed these new rules, I could feel the difference, as now I spend my time scheduling and organising my activities, which is very important to keep a balance in life.
An important realisation for me was that I should maintain these habits indefinitely and that they are not limited to the present because it is high time we start doing screen detox.
